The Problem of Pain

As a particularly dispassionate adolescent I had understood the doctrine of God's sovereignty with a certain intellectual fascination and naive gratitude. Entering parenthood has heightened my sense of empathy for other people's human experiences, especially those of the tragic kind. In a way, I feel more deeply human than before, yet it is a challenge to embrace the doctrine of God's sovereignty intellectually as well as emotionally. For the first time in my life I truly wrestle with theodicy.

I seem to remember J.I. Packer saying that those who lived in a different time did not have such thing as a 'problem of pain'; perhaps I need to read more Puritan literature.
