I find it difficult to hold respect for men who do things for the sake of attracting opposite sex. (I'm not talking about specific persons here, just a few instances that have come up recently.)
Whether it be athletics (and I guess ESPECIALLY athletics), dancing, being a gentleman in general, going to church, whatever. I don't understand it when guys do things JUST for that reason. If the activity is a learning or an enjoyable experience, then great. If you don't want to learn or absolutely positively hate it, then just quit! Being true to himself and pursuing his passions (be it athletics, studies, hobbies, a girl) are what make guys so attractive, and it's saddening when I see that some guys feel as though they have to be good at everything "masculine" ever.
(I should clarify here that such a seeking of "general popularity from the opposite sex" is different from pursuing a specific person. But I'm too tired and won't go into that right now.)
To conclude, when they enter a co-ed function, all men should assume that all women come for the sake of the activity, not to find a date. If there's an exception, she can announce herself somehow, but the default assumption is that she came to have fun doing that activity.
I must be really tired. Man, lest I write such a post again... *goes to bed*
Well said, and I do hope I haven't been guilty of that in the past. But I'm glad that you did mention there's a difference between doing it to attract all females and going after a specific person, in a which a guy may do things he may not ordinarily like to do for the sake of the girl...

Holy crap, guys.
Anyway, it's pretty tough. I'd say trying to attract girls (that is plural for a reason) is built into us guys instinctually... to the point of doing anything to accomplish it: athletics, dancing, etc. etc. It's definitely something I struggle with, but quite possibly my lack of athletic and dancing ability has helped a bit. :-P
